Resolutions, Expectations and Perfectionism

If you’re struggling to keep your New Year’s Resolution, it’s time to step back and see where you’re letting worry, assumptions, expectation and perfectionism get in your way of success.

In other words, you’re letting the primitive Caveman Brain call the shots.

Caveman Brain

  • Rigid
  • All-or-nothing
  • Success/Failure

Today work on moving your New Years Resolution to your Advanced Brain by tackling those expectations and perfectionism.

Advanced Brain

  • Flexible Experiment
  • Step-by-step
  • Acknowledge Progress

To move your resolution into your advanced brain, first give yourself some flexibility. The plan doesn’t need to be rigid; it’s just an experiment to see what works for you. A few years ago I worked on being more organized, and I ended up putting all my recipes on the computer. It was organized, but it didn’t work for me when it came to meal planning. So last fall I transferred them all to a recipe card box, and that’s been working much better for me. It’s all about being flexible and experimenting to find out what works for you.

Your Caveman Brain will also tell you that it’s all-or-nothing. You’re supposed to exercise 30 minutes a day and eat 3-5 servings of vegetables. Period. So January 1st rolls around and that’s your daily goal until you inevitably fall off the wagon and are filled with guilt and shame.

Forget the all-or-nothing guidelines you’ve been taught; move to the Advanced Brain by taking things step-by-step. Maybe start with 10 minutes of exercise and one serving of veggies for a week or two. See how that’s working for you and then bump it up a bit.

Your Caveman Brain will tell you that you’re failing, because you’re not doing enough. Success only comes when you execute perfectly and meet all expectations. So make sure to acknowledge your progress with your Advanced Brain. If you’re exercising 10 minutes today and you weren’t yesterday – that’s great work!! If you bump it up to 12 minutes next week – congratulations!

This is growth and progress. This is how you meet your goal and have long term success. Remember, it’s not just about January. You have all year to work on a Resolution. Experiment, be flexible, and acknowledge your step-by-step progress.
